Yah that init string was what was put in my Fedora Core here, I've never had to touch it. My guess is that S60 handsets just silently ignore that garbage. You don't actually *need* any of it, this isn't a real modem (ok it is, but you know what I mean). A simple 'ATZ' should suffice I think...

another thing that seemed strange, and maybe it's something i overlooked or havent read yet...
when every i connect to the phone/modem via bt the connection seems to "hang", when trying to reconnect (say after an attempted dial) im getting errors along the lines of permission denied. Im figuring this is something real basic that im just missing here.. to be sure it wasnt a phone configuration I connected w/ vmware+winxp and was able to create and reuse a bt connection..

I don't use wvdial, so I don't know how you'd put this in there, but I need this in my /etc/ppp/peers/t-mobile file for it to not disconnect immediately afterwards. still unusable, because it's too slow. no idea why, the connect just seems to sit idle and only receive a packet every couple of seconds instead of ... well, faster than that.

MODS: can we move this to the new linux-users corner, and maybe retitle this thread "8100 Bluetooth Modem" or something? Lots of good stuff in here.

Interesting! What OS and branding handset is yours? Mine's a T-Mobile branded 'Made in Mexico' (hecho en mexico!), running the official T-Mobile .064 firmware...

The 'Made in...' is under the battery, but I can't imagine that matters. Huh, I wonder why we have different output... it sounds like we're both running FC6 desktops, I'm using a generic Belkin USB bluetooth dongle from CompUSA - nothing special.
I'm kinda a BT idiot, I turn it on and it works -- never spent a lot of time learning it since I so rarely use it for anything. Is there a chance different adapters/dongles can scan for different stuff on remote devices?

Yeah, FC6 on a dell inspiron 8600. Under the battery shows made in mexico too.
I wonder if it would help to have connected this phone to a Windows desktop at some point? I have attempted to connect it to a vmware session but it didn't work out... didn't like the device(s) it saw. But I recall when I connected my nokia to a machine running macosx, an apple isync applet was pushed to the nokia 6600 and it became a service available for browsing. So I wonder if having connected the phone to a windows PC with the desktop software installed would push the needed modem stuff to the phone?
Okay, I read elsewhere that the missing services may have something to do with IT policy assigned by my BES. Since I'm the administrator of the BES, I can make changes to IT policy. I'll keep all interested advised of my findings.
BTW, how can I get my own icon/avatar set up?

Okay, I fixed the problem with the bluetooth services. Apparently, it came down as an IT policy restriction from somewhere. But since I am the admin of the BES here at the office, I simply created my own IT policy and openned those options up. My blackberry was updated within moments. Pretty cool stuff!

BB as Modem for Linux
Has anyone tried these instructions for using a Blackberry as a tethered modem for Linux?
wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/GSM_tethering_with_Linux
I couldn't get it to work using an 8700.

Take a read in the bcharge howto thread; basically these new Berrys have to have a special handhshake sent to the device to expose the proper interface; the coder on the Barry project figured that part out.
Once you let bcharge send the handshake, you *might* have better luck talking to the exposed 0x0004 rather than the default 0x0006 USB Mass Storage that's shown without bcharge. (I haven't tried myself yet, sorry)

Thanks, I dropped a note on that thread too.
Has anyone tried Wine with the drivers at webpages.charter.net/gwgaston/BBTools.html?

Its a bit of a cross-post, but this thread seems to reveal a bit of the "magic" behind the way the Pearl exposes its product ID to determine its data services. Seems like this would be related to the problems getting the Pearl to work as a bluetooth modem.
