There is one mistake in that article by Shaw. He states:
"It's also important to note that although most BlackBerry Patent applications are only published 18 months after they are filed, this one has only a four-month gap. these shorter gaps often occur when adaptation of proposed technology the patent describes is imminent."
By law, patents publish 18 months from their earliest priority (filing) date (unless a non-publication request is filed, which did not happen for this application). The touchscreen patent claims priority to a provisional application that was filed on November 21, 2002 (far more than 18 months ago). That means that by law, this new touchscreen patent would publish as soon as the patent office could process it and get it published. Shaw's assumption that this quick publication is somehow BlackBerry's doing and therefore an indication that adaptation of the technology must be imminent is faulty. All this patent tells you is that this touchscreen technology was originally filed in a patent application back in 2002.
My concerns after reading the document are that this method of providing a touch screen is not very good. It measures the displacement of liquid crystal. This means that someone with a bigger finger or someone that uses a different surface area will have different displacement than someone using a stylus, or someone with smaller fingers. This definitely can’t be as good as the one on the iPhone, which is a dream to use. It will be similar to other current generation windows mobile devices or worse. I also foresee problems with tracking once the lcd has been displaced, so things like dragging will be problematic. Its going to be a … should use a stylus primarily device. Why don’t they use the same technology that is in the iPhone? The touch screen tech they are using cannot compare.

That makes sense, and the pressure resistance touchscreen (like everything other than the iPhone) is less sensitive and prone to scratching the resistive layer. The glass lcd of the iPhone is the way to go now.

Its somewhat harder to tell without all the drawings but here is says that glass is part of the touchscreen:
