I've wiped with JL_Cmder without removing the battery. However, probably best to follow the instructions in the faq. They've worked for many people.

attachment = yes
MDS = No (as long as you aren't on a BES)
DOD = No
PK = Yes, if you like to have an encrypted secure place to store all those pesky internet, bank account, etc. passwords.

Uncheck any languages you won't use, and the demo video, as well.

ok, i have now reinstalled software twice each with different wipe procedures and the problem still exists.

i even tried before loading my backed up data and still happened. i noticed it starts when i edit APN settings so that opera can work.

is there something else to put in besides wap.voicestream.com?

SIM cards can go bad. For some reason, when they do, they can cause other things to mess up as well. It seems like you have done quite a bit already, i would say to at least give it a shot!

i just called t-mobile explaining that when i enter a APN to allow 3rd party apps to work thats when the issue starts and they said they couldnt help because it's not their problem, so alas i could not get them to send a new sim card.

now what do i do?

If you just go into a TMo store, and explain your problem, and ask to exchange your SIM card, they often will replace on the spot. Go when they are not busy.

Calling them about third party apps is no reason to replace the SIM card.

Did you load a fresh NEW OS to your BB when you did the jhl_cmder wipe, or restore the same old from the backup?

do you mean did i uninstall the OS that was installed on my computer first? No

only thing i restored from backup was my data the preferences file which is called backup.ipd

but even before loading the .ipd file i tried just putting in wap.voicesteam.com into APN and the same problem developed

Yes I have a data plan, usually have EDGE under bars for service and everthing was fine when I had the Cingular version .71

There seems to be some sort of conflict with the apn setting that's needed for 3rd party apps like opera.

Use this and search through the GSM carriers til you find one who still offers 4.2.0.71 for the pearl.
