What do you mean updates? I mean you could update the os which helps, you could add an media card to add some music and photos, you could get a larger battery (But i've heard that different batteries affect the signal, so I would not do that, read it on thread here about the bold), and you could get a case.

IMHO, you should get to know the device a bit and see what it can and cannot do before you try to fix what probably isn't broken.
