Default 2007 / 2010 co-existence with BES

Please Login to Remove!

We are in the process of migrating to 2010. We moved a handful of test mailboxes over and noticed that Blackberry devices stop syncing after the move. I read the BES guide for 2010, but it doesn't cover the co-existence scenario.

The besadmin account has the necessary permissions in 2010, however it's mailbox is still on a 2007 server. If I run the EMSTest utility on the BES server, it is unable to connect to a 2010 mailbox. This is the error:

Test User: Opening message store using

Test User: OpenMsgStore failed (8004011d)

Test User: CDO Server Name: outlook.domain.com

Test User: CDO Mailbox DN: /o=AU/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23S

PDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=test

Test User: CDO logon successful

Test User: CDO COM exception: Code = 800406f9, WCode = 04f9, Code meaning = ID

ispatch error #1273

Description = The information store could not be opened. [MAPI 1.0 - [MAPI_E

_LOGON_FAILED(80040111)]].

Test User: CDO test failed

Test User: Active Directory permissions test completed successfully

I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether the besadmin account should be moved to a 2010 server at the beginning or the end of the migration. We are doing phased mailbox moves, so it's critical for users on both systems to be able to sync their devices. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The BES service account mailbox does not need to be moved. We too are in co-existence and (mostly) functioning.

If you haven't already, I would re-run all the various commands for permissions just to be sure that you've got all bases covered in terms of mailbox/AD perms, role membership, etc. This also includes the throttling policy.

Can you log in to the mailbox via OWA using the service account creds?

Anything valuable in the MAGT log? You should have a new MAGT running for any of your 2010 users.

Out of curiosity, you have a 2007 Public Folder Server as well as one for 2010, correct? Unrelated to the msgstore, but may be relevant once you resolve that.

Thanks for the reply. Logging on to OWA using the besadmin account works.

I can't apply the throttling policy because the besadmin account is still on 2007, Exchange complains about the wrong object version.

The MAGT log has some failures right around when the mailbox is moved, but no entries for the account after that. Not sure what you mean about having a new MAGT running, I don't see a new log.

We do have both 2007 and 2010 public folders and they are replicating fine.

I forgot to ask, did you have to make any changes to the BES MAPI profile? I think the BES server is having trouble accessing the 2010 mailboxes through the CAS servers.

If you moved mailbox servers, there should be a new MAGT log file as a new server would need to launch a new messaging agent (assuming you're not statically assigning messaging agents, which is worth checking).

You can apply the throttling policy to the BES user. I'm not sure what the best practice is there, but I've heard multiple things from RIM on that. Better safe than sorry.

I made no changes to the MAPI profile at any point.

Steve,
Can you tell me what command you ran to apply the throttling policy for the BES account. This is the error I get:

set-mailbox besadmin -ThrottlingPolicy "BES Throttling Policy"
Property ThrottlingPolicy can't be set on this object because it requires the object to have version 0.10 (14.0.100.0) or later. The object's current version is 0.1 (8.0.535.0).
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Set-Mailbox], InvalidObjectOperationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : 18A81FDF,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTa sks.SetMailbox

I'm checking on the MAGT log now.

In a mixed environment, the besadmin account should be on the Exchange 2010 server so that the throttling policy can be disabled for that account.

I ran the commands from the documentation, to be honest, which lead you to alter the default policy. If you're going to assign a policy, assign it to the mailbox of the user, since you can't yet assign it to the BESAdmin.

Knottyrope: Do you have a source for that recommendation? I have neither seen it nor been told it by RIM support.

As for the information store problems, I can't say I have a recommendation outside of calling RIM. It may be MAPI/CDO objects, for all I know.

What version BES are you on? including service packs
What level RU on 2010 is installed?
What CDO version are you using?
