Basically, I randomly have problem opening up an SMS from somebody, after exchanging SMS for a few times.

I say it is a few times, because sometimes the problem occurs after exchanging 5, or 10, or never happens. Also, it is random and is not limited to a certain contact, because it can happen with any contact I have on my phone.

When the problem occurs, I cannot open the SMS to view the content. If I select the SMS by pressing on the trackball, nothing happens. Doesn't open the SMS, no menu shows up, just nothing.

If I press the menu button while the SMS I would like to open is highlighted, again, nothing happens. No menu shows up, doesn't open up anything, just nothing.

This is annoying because not only I can't read, but I can't reply back either! While I'm having this problem, if I try to compose a new SMS to the contact with that problem, the phone will not let me create a new SMS. It will let me enter the name of the contact, but it won't let me press OK to create a new SMS.

Only workaround so far is to just delete the entire SMS history of that contact. Once I do that, it starts working normally again. Does anybody know of a permanent fix for this problem or is anyone else having a similar problem? I would prefer if I could delete the SMS history when I would like to instead of being forced to...

Try a battery pull. Happened to me before.
