Default Newbie needs help understanding BIS

I've had a BlackBerry Storm with a data plan through Verizon for a couple of months now. When I'm browsing with this phone, am I using the BIS over Verizon's network? Or is BIS a completely different data plan, independent of carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, etc.?

If you are OFF a WiFi connection, you are browsing through BIS.
Your email data flow is through the BIS. Facebook and other BlackBerry applications are using BIS. And it is through Verizon's network to RIM.
