Vodafone 9300 now on T-Mobile- 3G problem

Trying out a BB that I bought new in India and ran on the Vodafone network. It's Curve 9300 (3G) that I unlocked and T-Mobile activated it on their network yesterday. We also activated a HTV Sensation (4G).
The HTC just hums along but my BB is super slow. It stays on the EDGE network and download speeds are terrible. When I put it on 3G only, I have no signal, while the HTC stays on 4G.
So I tried to only do 3G and I have no signal. What this tell my dumb butt is that my Vodafone Curve is not compatible with TM's 3G network and I need to buy a $600 Bold (without UMA but love the size and touchscreen) or a 9360.
So, if I get a Bold, is it possible that RIM will "make" them UMA-capable sometimes in the future with a software update? I love the Bold. So very dumb of them to take the UMA away from a flagship model. But $600? Yikes, I can see that price dropping- they are stockpiled at the stores.
Main reason for a BB (I am an Android user) is that I can BBM with friends all over the world. Otherwise, I love the bigger Android phones (Sensation, Galaxy), etc..
